Not trying to blow my own trumpet but I agree. Between that and the mammoth DA batch that I did around the same time, I've certainly gotten a lot more adventurous with what I try to do =D
I'm so glad you picked out #3, because I worked forEVER on that one (well, as much as forever can be when you do your entry in a day... =P) and I tried really hard to get colours that worked =D
I take it you like the greens then...? Actually, a lot of the icons you singled out there use the same texture. 2, 6, 8 and 20 for certain, and the one I'm using here, but I know there are more. 22 actually uses a texture (I still haven't figured out what a gradient is...), I think it's by trapne.
I'm surprised you think 7 looks too blurry - I think it's one of the 'crispy' ones! And yeah, I need to work on balancing the sharpness. Some of these were better before (a couple of the blurry ones were sharper before, but I had to resize them slightly and paint de-sharpened them in the process, god knows why) but on the whole I need to be more careful. Especially with the oversharpening...
Heh heh, 6 isone of the icons I'm not so keen on, for the exact reason that you seem to like it! I'm not a fan of the lightblob/textures on that one =P And yeah, I agree with you on 7 and 17. 17 was particularly difficult because I changed the colouring quite a bit from the original icon, and when I put a texture over it, Ron's side looked how I wanted it to, but Hermione's wouldn't work whatever I tried, so in the end I basically gave up... Oops.
And hey, don't apologise! After I basically ripped into you (sorry!!!!! *HUGS X A BILLION*) I think I deserve it! =P
(Also I'm a bit excited about the icon battle now.)
Me too =D One of the reasons I decided to sign-up impromptu to inspired20in20 was because I needed to up my game in order to not be eclipsed by your icons =D

I love green, I just can't pull it off myself! I have 'go-to' textures that I use a lot as well, at least I know what I'm doing with them. I get why you'd re-use that green texture, it works really well!
Yeah, I can see the crispy bits in 7, but it also doesn't look very neat from my computer...idk.
Gradients look like this (http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m558/the_silverdoe/gradient.png) or this (http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m558/the_silverdoe/gradient2.png), they're super useful for lighting/colouring. There's a gradient tool in Photoshop, don't remember if there's one in Gimp... I didn't know about it then anyway. But gradient textures work just fine!
I love 6, I think the colouring/lighting balance is great (I uploaded it, lol). =)
Resizing can be a problem... I now try to resize as soon as I can and work directly with a 100x100 canvas. Do you still use Paint? I used to work with Gimp, but honestly, Photoshop has made my life a lot easier, especially now I use CS6. The sharpening filters are a lot more effective than the sharpening brush in Gimp.
Ron's side looked how I wanted it to, but Hermione's wouldn't work whatever I tried
Can you use layer mask in Gimp? I discovered it a month ago in PS (felt so stupid for not using it before), it's a life-saver!
*hugs back*
No need to apologise either, your concrit has been most helpful! I'm just the queen of over-reactions! =P
Aww. I don't think there's any risk of my icons eclipsing yours but thanks!! =)

And ooh, *feels honoured* =D
Recently discovered that there's a sharpening feature in Gimp outside of teh brush (i.e. can uniformly sharpen the whole image), but I've not used it yet. I know photoshop is a heck of a lot better than Gimp, but Gimp is free and it took me so long to get my head around that I'm rather partial to it now!
You can use layer masks in Gimp - I saw a tutorial that featured them a while back - but I've not tried them.

I found something on Tumblr that allowed me to crack Photoshop. Otherwise it's not like I can afford it or anything...Tbh at first I didn't want to leave Gimp and thought I would never get used to PS but it's not that hard to use.Layer masks are life-savers! For instance what you said about 17 - well with a layer mask you could have masked the texture that didn't work for Hermione and only kept the bits that made Ron look the way you wanted. I use them all the time!

And yeah, it sounds like I'm going to have to give layer masks another go then. After my exams though!
