209. Best Icon(s) of 2021

Wed, 16 Mar 2022 16:33:49 GMT

Posted by: novindalf

Starting off this new DW comm with the results of bestof_icons 2021, and my best icon of 2021 was...

The rest of my top 9 were:

I'm super pleased to see some of my favourite icons in the mix here, especially the ones featuring more complex negative space work and/or text! Finally managing to figure out how to warp text along a path was a big win for me in 2021, so it's great to see that reflected in the popular opinion too!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote! Take a look at everyone's best icon of 2021 by clicking the banner below!

My winning icons to date:
2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017

206. Sixteen Icons

Wed, 06 Oct 2021 17:46:00 GMT

I haven't done anything like a 20in20 in SUCH a long time, but between this theme, the beautiful insp post, and rewatching Bridgerton, I actually managed to crack out a whole 16-icon set! They are all fairly simple in terms of composition/lighting/colouring, partly because I wanted to focus on the cropping element for the theme, but also because I'm quite rusty at iconning in general and trying to do lots of things in one icon seems like a mammoth task at the moment. Still, hope you like! All screencaps used in this post can be found here, or click on the icon for that screencap.

204. Tutorial #20 - How to Create Text Along a Path in GIMP

Sun, 27 Jun 2021 14:09:00 GMT

Posted by: novindalf

Tutorial: How to create text along a path in GIMP
Version / Transferability: I am currently using GIMP 2.10.22 but this should be transferable to other versions of GIMP.
Prior knowledge required: This tutorial assumes you know how to create new layers, create basic text, change active foreground colour, change active layer, turn off layer visibility.
References: I used this tutorial to learn how to do this process, so it forms the basis of this tutorial.

202. Twenty-Eight Icons

Mon, 01 Mar 2021 11:06:00 GMT

First post of 2021 with icons from January and February. I tried and failed miserably at switching over to PhotoShop, but I did update the version of GIMP I use from 2.8.6 to 2.10.22 at the start of February, so I've had to adjust to things being slightly different to what I am expecting! Don't think I'll be trying PS again for a while, I'm just too set in my ways and it was way too different!

Films [7]
Disney (Brave) [4]
MCU (Wonder Woman 1984) [1]
Narnia [1]
The Phantom of the Opera [1]

Television [17]

Stock [4]

Includes entries for stocklove_ic C11 (Winter Wonderland), elitesimplicity C281 (Too Soon), capicontest C117 (The Great Outdoors), bestof_icons Remakes 2020, capicontest C118 (Heather and Moss), capicontest C119 (Painted), elitesimplicity C284 (Hairporn) & perioddrama_ic C39 (Animated)

201. Best Icon(s) of 2020

Sun, 28 Feb 2021 13:55:00 GMT

Posted by: novindalf

The results of bestof_icons 2020 came back, and my best icon of 2020 was...

The rest of my top 13 were:

So it turns out green was a popular choice in my icons last year, which I guess makes sense as it's probably my favourite colour and I really enjoy making icons using it, which probably shows! I'm also really pleased to see some of my attempts at more complex compositions show up here as I've been trying to really focus on that lately. My 'best' icon wasn't necessarily my favourite, but it does have some different colouring and textures in it that I was trying out, so it's nice to see that experimentation pays off!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote! Take a look at everyone's best icon of 2020 by clicking the banner below!

194. Best Icon(s) of 2019

Tue, 24 Mar 2020 18:38:00 GMT

Posted by: novindalf

A little late, but the results at bestof_icons came in a while back and my best icon of 2019 was...

The rest of my top 9 were:

It's quite a mixture of styles, fandoms, and how early/late in the year the icons were made and I'm not really sure how to interpret that. I have been making an active effort to try new things and not always stick to the same style, so it's nice to see some of the more experimental icons in here, especially the text ones. Some of these were super simple to make though, not what I think of as my 'best' efforts, but at least one of my personal favourites (DTF Holt ;D) made it in there.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who took the time to vote! Take a look at everyone's best icon of 2019 by clicking the banner below!
